Detailed Description
14th century German Onion-top Bascinet w/Visor After the example at Veste Choburg, c. 1380 12ga. mild or 14ga. stainless steel!
Size S in stock now! Taking orders for M-XL on a first-come, first-served basis.
This beauiful example of the armourer's art is our exclusive production replica of the original German-style bascinet surviving in the Veste Choburg. Scholars argue about the date, but the range of 1360-90 is the debate's boundary.
This is a very complex and difficult piece to produce. Great attention to detail has been put in with regard to the serrated eyeslot, the engraved lines surrounding the occularium, and the square resolution at the pignose's tip. Hundskulls or Pignoses like this were very popular during the middle phase of the Hundred Years' War, and this style remains a potent martial icon amongst those fighting in tournament companies or in the Combat of the Thirty encounters which have become increasingly popular in the last few years.
This fine helmet comes COMPLETE with liner, visor, vervelles, AND Revival Martial Arts interchangeable latch system. An optional grille (for SCA use) and/or WMA pierced visor is also available. It is formed from 12ga. mild steel on the onion-topped bowl and 14ga. in the visor. The stainless version is 14ga. throughout--true combat grade.
An optional aventail of 6mm flat, wedge-riveted is available.
Because of the helmet's shape, the sizing on our Veste Choburg can run a little smaller than a more common bascinet. The small on this size is good for those with a 21" - 21.5" circumference head, while the medium is good for a 22" - 22.5". Large is 23" - 23.5", while extra-large is 24" - 24.5".
As with all of our bascinets, it comes with a liner, but you should expect to remove the liner and stuff it to your own liking before fighting in it. The liner is easy to stitch in and can be removed for washing.
Note that the designers, Revival and Revival Martial Arts cannot warrant the safety of our equipment for any particular activity as we cannot know the uses to which our items may be put. Check with your local safety officer regarding specifics for the activity you are pursuing.
