Throughout the 14th century the iconic plaque belt adorns funery brasses and was an important mark of social distinction for members of the knightly classes, both men and women. Bearing the distinctive "chocolate bar" shape, the plaque belt seems to have been worn very low on the hips. Much like the helmet, the plaque belt is a point of focus on any of the cottes or "cotehardies" worn during the middle and later part of the fourteenth century.

Based on numerous examples, our highly customizable version comes fully assembled, alternating empty quatrefoils and escutcheons, according to the options you choose. The empty quatrefoils can be left as is, enameled or have studs put in to reflect your personal tastes. Available studs include fleur-de-lis, heraldic roses, herladic bees, stags, laurel wreaths, and pelicans. Made from 100% solid brass, they are obviously NOT the white metal cabinet-hardware versions common today amongst reenactors. The size is ideal for men and women--they aren't too heavy but are heavy enough to stay in place. The belt is distinctive as it is, but we have designed it as a platform that can be endlessly customized:

  • Epoxy-enamel coloring may be added at a cost of $2.50 per plaque.
  • Belt studs may be added into the quatrefoils
  • The escutcheons may be painted with heraldic devices

Each plaque is 1 3/4" (5.5cm) with an additional 1/4" for the hinge making the total length 2 inches per plaque. To find out how many you need, simply take the measurement of where you want the belt to ride, wearing the clothes you intend to wear. We recommed also including a "thick clothing" plaque that you can add or subtract depending upon the bulk of the clothes chosen for the day.

Our plaques do not attach to leather, so there is nothing to wear out. The brass may be kept bright with the application of any brass cleaner or just lemon juice and salt; this does not damage any epoxy-enamel, and for leather belts, it doesn't damage the eather!
